UNITS TO BE COVERED: Scientific Method & Inquiry, Ecology, Energy Flows & Cycles, Environmental Awareness & Issues, Cells, Cell transport, Mitosis & Cancer, Genetics & DNA, Classification & Diversity of Life, Microorganisms
WEEK IN VIEW:
1/22-1/26 -- Midterm part 2 review on Tuesday. Wednesday will be midterm part 1 and due to doubles, Thursday will be midterm part 2 for periods 1,3, 7 and Friday will be midterm part 2 for periods 2 and 6. After the midterm, students will begin our next unit on mitosis.
1/29-2/2 -- Mitosis, mitosis, mitosis!!! Delving heavily into what is actually occurring within each step of mitosis.
2/5-2/9 -- Finishing up our mitosis unit with our flipbook, CYOSG, and moving into what happens when mitosis goes crazy: cancer.
2/12-2/16 -- Review for mitosis on Monday, with test on Tuesday. Starting our new unit on genetics too...traits and Punnet squares to come.
2/19-2/23 -- Moving more into DNA, and understanding the underlining factors as to how DNA truly works.
2/26-3/2 -- Finishing up our unit on genetics and DNA with pedigrees. We'll then be heading into our next unit on evolution and classification of life.
3/5-3/9 -- DNA/genetics unit test on Monday 3/5. Tuesday will be spent creating dichotomous keys for aliens and leaves. Wednesday through Friday, the students will venture into the 6 kingdoms of life, with a project due 3/14.
3/12-3/16 -- Monday (1,3,7) and Tuesday (2,4,6) are double periods whereby the students will be starting our next unit on microorganisms, specifically focusing on bacteria with notes and microscope work. Wednesday is a review day to prepare for Thursday's test on classification and diversity of life. Friday will then finish up with bacteria information and activities.
3/19-3/23 -- Starting the week off reviewing viruses and then heading into protists. Protists characteristics will be discussed then viewed and drawn under the microscope. The week will finish with information on fungi.
3/26-3/29 -- Changes to come, based on last week's snow! This week will now mostly finish up our unit on microorganisms. Monday will be spent finishing notes on the fungi section, the rest of the week will focus on microscope work, both with protists and fungi. Thursday, will be spent reviewing for the test that will occur the Wednesday we come back from break.
4/3-4/6 -- Starting the week with a refresher of the microorganisms unit to head into that unit test on Wednesday. The rest of the week the students will be consumed in an infectious disease project, with presentation to occur the following week.
4/9-4/13 -- ELA PSSA's to occur Tuesday through Thursday of this week, whereby on those days, classes will be dramatically shortened. This week will focus on their infectious disease project with preparations as well as presentations. The end of the week will begin our last unit, a brand new one, on the critical zone.
4/16-4/20 -- Starting off the week with a science in the news activity, then heading into PSSA's math on Tuesday and Wednesday. That being said, we'll be starting a new unit on the critical zone. More to come...
4/23-4/27 -- Starting the week off discussing watersheds, with a lab. Tuesday is double periods 2, 4, 6 and Wednesday is doubles 1, 3, 7, where we'll focus on water quality with chemical tests. Thursday, the completed chemical tests will be explained and then more work on our specific watershed. Friday: guest speakers from Berks Conservation District to solely showcase Enviroscapes activity.
4/30-5/4 -- This week will continue work with the critical zone, with specifications surrounding watersheds, land use, and macroinvertebrates.
5/7-5/11 -- Starting the week off focusing on macroinvertebrates, and then ending the week with double periods on Thursday (1,3,7) and Friday (2,6,4), where the students will be in the creek completing all different types of water quality tests.
5/14-5/18 -- The week will begin with a collaboration project for art on the critical zone, then creeking it again on Wednesday (periods 2,4,6) and Thursday (periods 1,3,7) during double periods, and ending with Career Day on Friday.
5/21-5/24 -- Data discussion on Monday regarding creek investigations from the past two weeks, to focus on your final critical zone project. Thursday will solely focus on you final study guide.
5/29-6/1 -- Tuesday through Thursday will solely focus on art/science integration of story-telling through the critical zone. Friday is a work day on either/both critical zone final project or final study guide. Both assignments are due 6/4.
6/4-6/8 -- Starting off the week with 2 assignments due Monday (final study guide and pg. 63 critical zone final project). Tuesday will be a large review for the final. Wednesday doubles (pds. 1, 3, 7) and Thursday doubles (pds. 2,4, 6); during this time, the students will complete their only dissection. Friday starts finals.
